Spotlight on Sport: Netball
DMU Netball is one of the largest female sports clubs at the university. With 5 teams, 3 of which play BUCS (The national university sport league) and 2 development squads, there is something for everyone. We cater to a whole range of ability, from the very experienced to people who have never played before!
We have regular training from our fabulous coaches and fitness sessions which are hosted at the amazing on-campus sports facilities at the Queen Elizabeth II Leisure Centre.
We also have regular socials, which, like all the other sports teams run every Wednesday, which is hosted at Marz bar in town. This is an amazing way to meet a whole load of friends, get merry and wear some hilarious fancy dress. (You’ll no doubt see us during Freshers’ Week!!) These are open to anyone, not only to players as we also have a number of social members.
Every year we also go on TOUR! This is usually some place hot and an unforgettable week where you’ll make some friends for life!
We also have an annual varsity match against the neighbours up the road, Uni of Leicester. This is hyped up for weeks and is an amazing experience where friends and family come to watch!
What were the club’s accomplishments last season?
Every year we host a charity netball tournament, Netfest, for anyone to join. (Staff/sports teams/societies/course teams) This year we managed to raise a whopping £1566 for chosen charities and in turn won the SULETS Outstanding Volunteering Project Award!
Our 2nd and 3rd team also came third and second in their BUCs league!
We were finalists at Scrappies, the charity rugby tournament!
What is your most memorable moment from last season?
The whole club coming together at the end of varsity, we were a unit who support each other through thick and thin, a family away from home.
What are your aspirations for this season?
This year we aim to secure top 2 positions in the leagues throughout all 3 BUCs teams, win our varsity and most importantly steal back our title of Scrappies winners off the pesky women’s football.
How much does it cost to join your club?
Its freeeeee! We don’t charge anything to join the club!
(However, please note that the SU does charge £40 for anyone playing in BUCs for all clubs for insurance reasons.)
Why should students join your club?
Because we’re the best! You’ll have so much fun and create memories that you’ll remember forever with an amazing bunch of girls. Whatever you aim to do, play competitive sport, get fit or just have fun and get crunk then we are the society for you. All in all, DMU Netball is a fantastic society, run by a student committee that will ensure to make your three years at DMU the best ever. Many of our members who joined in their second year say just how much they regretted not joining in their first year, so don’t miss out!
