Spotlight on Sport: Women’s Basketball (DMU Pitbulls)
DMU Pitbulls is a friendly and hard-working team who likes to keep fit and have fun at the same time. Everyone is welcome, no matter how experienced or not you are. We’re currently in the 2nd division of BUCS league and our matches are every Wednesday.
Our Socials are held weekly where we will often grace the bars and clubs in town with our presence, but also have weeks in which we will do things such as bowling or a film night. We hold socials to help the team get to know each other a bit more outside of training and matches and it’s definitely a great way to meet people outside of your course and accommodation.
At the end of the season we play Varsity, our most epic and memorable game of the season, against our rivals Leicester University (Leicester who?) Varsity is a really fun and amazing experience and most definitely makes you feel like Michael Jordan stepping in the NBA. *flicks hair*
To top off Varsity, last year we went on our first ever tour and it was a bloody good experience to say the least. We will definitely be going this year and it’s something you definitely don’t want to miss out on! The Pitbulls would love to go into more detail, but you know what they say, what happens on tour stays on tour!
What is your most memorable moment from last season?
Our most memorable moment as a team (because we have countless individual memories which are best kept unsaid) was after we took our team photo. We decided to go to the park and prep for varsity, which now thinking back on it, wasn’t a good idea. It was raining, we were outside (which is ironic as we play indoors) and practically rugby tackling each other on the court. That day, pretty much every girl left with some sort of injury (#WhenBanterGoesTooFar) and to make matters worse, we had training at 8am the next morning. But to say the least, at that moment we knew we were ready for Varsity, not only as individuals but as a family.
What are your aspirations for this season?
Our aim is to come first in our league and to win VARSITY of course! We are also aiming to become and win the most improved team of the year.
How much does it cost to join your club?
Nothing. No joining fee. You only really need to buy your active card to insure yourself when you play games and practice in the sports hall. It only costs £40 for the year, but don’t worry, we’re not the only club who does this, all sports teams need to have active cards.
Why should students join your club?
Who wouldn’t want to join women’s basketball? Our team is like one big family! We are a crazy, mixed bunch! You’ll enjoy playing basketball (and keeping fit) but most of all, you’ll have fun no matter what! The team is also very supportive of new team members whatever your ability and we look out for each other no matter what.
Once a Pitbull, Always a Pitbull!
