Hello, Music Fans!

After another busy old week at DMU, we here at Demon Music think it is time for another Monday Playlist, jam-packed with more hand-picked songs to get you through the week!

Since some of us have been bogged down with head colds and others with university week, we have decided to share with you the tracks that have gotten us through illness and stress, in the hope that they’ll do the same for you. It is another mixed bag of eclectic and classic songs so, as always, we hope that you discover something new!

This week’s content took us back in time with a From The Archives review of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ with our resident music historian Alex, and then threw us right back into the present with Ethan’s opinion on the new Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip record Repent, Replenish, Repeat. Be sure to check them out if you have five minutes to spare, and remember to pop back this week for more exciting music gossip as always!

Here at Demon Music we are still on the look out for some new writers to join our brilliant team! So if you want to get involved and write about your favourite music, be sure to grab yourself a Demon Media membership before dropping me a message at nicolaclaireallen@gmail.com. I’ll then get back to you as soon as I can with more information about joining Demon Music, and the types of content that we’re looking for.

‘Til next week,

Nicola x

1. ‘I Hate (Live from The Borderline, London)’ – Passenger

Natalie Whitehouse (@_natbcfc) says: “After gigs I have the tendency to (over)play albums and songs; I guess it’s some sort of post-gig coping mechanism. Anyway, after seeing Passenger on Thursday (October 10),  I’ve listened to nothing and no one else since. As such, one of his tracks was a natural choice for my song of the week. I decided to go with ‘I Hate’, a truthful and humorous song about those little things that we all find annoying, including The XFactor, fussy eaters and pointless status updates on Facebook! As Mike Rosenberg so honestly puts it: ‘sometimes all you can do is hate!'”

2. ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ – Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Nicola Allen (@NicoClaireAllen) says: “So I caught a bit of Strictly Come Dancing this weekend whilst at home nursing a beautiful head cold, and who should I spot on the ballroom dancefloor but Ms. Sophie Ellis-Bextor! Surely if she’s committed homicide in her dancing shoes she shouldn’t be on Strictly? Okay, that was a poor attempt at wit, but seeing her Samba across the floor definitely rekindled my love for her 2001, decade-old hit, ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’. A classic at the early noughties school disco, this is arguably her greatest track ever and one that gets me up jiving every time . Not that I’m as good as Ms Ellis-Bextor is in SCD ballroom; nor will I ever be!”

3. ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home feat. Majid Jordan’ – Drake

Nicola says: “Whilst I try and act all cool most of the time through my love of obscure artists, there is occasionally a song in the charts that catches my attention and goes on repeat for a while. This week, Drake’s latest single ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ is that track. I have literally had this song on replay since I discovered it, yet I am still not a fan of Drake’s other material. Sexy, sultry and slow, this song is wonderful to lounge to in the evening before hitting the hay. I would even go as far as saying that this is the best single to make its way across the Atlantic in a very long time, and it’ll definitely be staying locked on repeat in my world for a few more weeks yet.”

4. ‘Moonshine’ – Bruno Mars

Nicola says: “My love for Bruno Mars came out of nowhere really; I wasn’t a massive fan of his debut record Doo-Wops and Hooligans, but upon hearing ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ from latest record Unorthodox Jukebox I became hooked on this incredible US artist. I am so hooked in fact that I was very nearly in tears when I missed out on tickets to his 2013 Moonshine Jungle Tour, which is currently making its way around the UK; he was even in my hometown this weekend whilst I was there – bah humbug! Bruno has an deliciously soulful voice along with an insane versatility that sees him go from performing a global pop hit to a gentle ballad in a drop of his fedora. ‘Moonshine’ sits somewhere in the middle of those two aforementioned extremes, with its light and airy synth instrumentality that run alongside the story-telling lyrics of drinking ‘Moonshine’ – a.k.a.  illegally produced alcoholic beverages. This is one of my all-time favourites from Unorthodox Jukebox, and one that I am sure you will all love too if you’re a fan of laid-back tunes.”

5. ‘Magician’s Assistant’ – Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip

Ethan Williamson (@E523W) says: “Reviewing this pair’s latest album got me thinking about their past successes, and this track certainly qualifies as one. More a full on spoken word piece than a song, it is near guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. A candid, unapologetic look at self-harm and suicide, and the pain involved – both for the individual and their family. Not an easy listen, but a powerful, affecting one.”

6. ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ – The Darkness

Alex Underwood (@broadcasteralex) says: “Despite the glam-rockers recent reunion and comeback, this is the best song that they’ve recorded to date. The 2003 hit is a great song that flirts with the heavier side of rock, with fantastic guitar solos between simplistic lusty lyrics that are sung in a surprisingly high pitch. And if you haven’t seen the video, you’re missing out: it’s set in space!”

7. ‘Things We Lost In The Fire’ – Bastille

Harry Dean (@harrydeansays) says: “I literally haven’t stopped singing this all week – so much so that I managed to get my mum humming the tune over Skype! I am a massive Bastille fanboy and this song literally does it all for me; if only you could all be a fly-on-the-wall as I’m driving down the M1 screaming my heart out to this song! It has got an amazing backing tune, and Daniel Smith’s voice is just heavenly. Defintitely my number 1 pick this week!”

8. ‘Turning Tables’ – Adele

Harry says: “A bit of an old school song now, but my flatmates will almost certainly let you know of my obsession for this woman. ‘Turning Tables’ has a fantastic narrative that is considered a classic themes throughout Adele’s music – a break up story! That said, the emotion in this song can really pluck the right chord in anyone (given the right moment), and that is probably the reason that  it is number four on my iTunes top played list; I promise I don’t sit at home crying all day long!”

9. ‘Lose My Breath’ – Destiny’s Child

Hollie Copas (@holc93) says: “I know it’s a golden oldie, but it is an undeniable classic! I’ve been having this on during my walks to uni each morning, and it is tempting not to start shakin’ it in the middle of campus! Bey and her girls are the epitome of glamorous R ‘n’ b, and Destiny’s Child will always be loved by fans young and old, girl or guy!”

10. ‘Get It Over With’ – Rihanna

Sarah Seaton says: “Although this song isn’t taken from RiRi’s most recent album, instead her 2012 album Unapologetic, the melody is beautifully simple whilst the lyrics are wholly poetic. Even though her description in the song is clearly about smoking, feeling high and being in another place, it is extremely relaxing, as though she is taking us with her as she swims through her thoughts.”
