Another game down and another win for Leicester City as they took another step towards inevitable promotion, impressively beating a struggling Charlton Athletic 3-0 at the King Power Stadium this afternoon.

Goals from Jamie Vardy, Danny Drinkwater and David Nugent sealed the win as the Foxes remained 8 points clear at the Sky Bet Championship summit.

Leicester had failed to win in their previous three games over The Addicks including a 2-1 defeat at The Valley back in August.

But it was Nigel Pearson’s men who got the early breakthrough after Anthony Knockaert’s strong challenge on halfway allowed David Nugent the chance to find strike partner Jamie Vardy, who cleverly tucked back inside onto his left before expertly slotting home for his 13th of the season.

A lapse in concentration and miscommunication between Kasper Schmeichel and Wes Morgan almost immediately allowed Simon Church in for the equaliser, but Leicester continued to dominate despite the second goal eluding them for much of the first half.

Resilience from the visitors defence the underlying reason but, as for the Foxes they lacked the cutting edge which has been their forte in their current thirteen game unbeaten run.

Charlton had failed to win away since November in a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City and it was evident as their lack in attacking impetus proved why they are also the Championship’s lowest scorers.

Just two minutes after half-time Leicester deservedly doubled their lead. January’s Championship Player of the Month, Danny Drinkwater hammering home into a gaping net from 10 yards after Jeffery Schlupp’s marauding run picked out Nugent whose initial effort cannoned off the chest of The Addicks goalkeeper, Ben Hamer.

A Leicester victory was then put beyond any doubt on 65 minutes when David Nugent was allowed acres of space to shape a sumptuous effort past the helpless Hamer to make the scores 3-0. The link-up play and quality of finishing from the deadly Foxes front pairing proving they are ready for the step up to the Premier League.

A win for Burnley at Turf Moor over fellow promotion hopefuls Derby County meant the gap remained at 8 points, but Leicester move ever close to the Premier League after a 10 year absence.
