subaqua

Taster session: 27th September 2014, 12pm at the QEII Pool.

Training: Every Monday in the QEII Pool at 2:30-3:30pm for octopush, and scuba courses taught at Stoney Cove Diveschool are personally tailored around your schedule.

Match and League info: This is the first year that DMU SubAqua is teaming up with Leicester University Diving Society (LUDS) to organize a Varsity competition, which is one of the first ever competitions of its kind in the UK. We’re also starting an underwater hockey (Octopush) team which will train every Monday at 2:30pm so we can bring SubAqua to a wider and more competitive audience.

Social: Every Wednesday and every other Friday at The Orange Tree. See the Facebook group for the full schedule.

Chairperson: Melissa Jackson, 3rd Year, BSc Biomedical Science, PADI Rescue and Enriched Air Diver.

What were the clubs accomplishments in the previous season?

We had record number of signups from the year previously, which led to a far better participation during the try dive sessions and more students qualified as PADI Open Water Divers with an additional Drysuit Qualification than ever before, which is a huge leap for SubAqua.

What are your aspirations for this season?

Obviously our main focus this year is increasing participation for students. Last year it felt like if you weren’t doing a Scuba Course then you weren’t a part of SubAqua. This year as chair, I want to max out participation and command a larger presence on campus; after all, we’re DMU SubAqua, not just DMU Scuba. So we’re currently organizing a Varsity like we say, which will take a lot of planning and though as there is no precedent nor guideline for one: we’re literally starting from scratch but I’m already so proud of the links we have made from outside DMU on this subject, which includes articles on our ideas published in DIVER, the UKs bestselling Scuba Diving Magazine.

Most memorable moment from last year?

Probably looking at our Freshers at the try dives, and looking at them now, seeing how far they have improved their skills and techniques underwater to become awesome divers in such a short space of time.

Why should students join SubAqua?

If you’re tired of the sports you’ve been forced to play in PE for the last 7 odd years and want to remember your time at DMU as a time where you tried something completely different, you should probably try SubAqua.

Anything else?

None of us have ever gotten the bends, nor been bitten by a shark. Scuba is one of the safest, most exciting extreme sports you can ever do.
