The American Music Awards celebrated the best talent from all over the world, with Lorde, Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea all winning big proving that this year’s music awards firmly belonged to the girls.

Not content with merely being nominated, British lads One Direction won all three of the awards they were nominated for highlighting that the boys are just as loved across the pond as they are here in the UK. One Direction won Artist Of The Year, Favourite Band Duo or Group – Pop/Rock and Favourite Pop/Rock Album for ‘Midnight Memories’.

Taylor Swift was a big winner taking home the Dick Clark Award For Excellence and celebrated in style by busting her best dad dance moves as she watched best friend Lorde take to the stage to perform her track ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ from the upcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack. Taylor got so excited for Lorde that she planted a massive smooch on the New Zealander’s cheek which then remained there for the remainder of the night. If we were Lorde right now, we’d never wash our faces ever again either!

Not content with winning one of the best awards on the night, Swift also opened the show with the first ever television performance of her latest single ‘Blank Space’ which brought the house down. Swift’s award was presented to her by none other than Diana Ross, much to the delight of Swift who has silenced her doubters with new record ‘1989’.

Sam Smith, Katy Perry and 5 Seconds Of Summer all picked up one award apiece in their respective categories. Performances came from Charli XCX who performed a mash-up of her singles ‘Boom Clap’ and ‘Break The Rules’ backed by her all girl power band, Charli has firmly cemented her status as fully fledged pop-star as she ripped through outfit changes and even a mosh pit. The unlikely pairing of Sam Smith and A$AP Rocky was an interesting combo as they took to the stage to belt out Smith’s hit ‘I’m Not The Only One’ but as always, if something isn’t broke then don’t fix it. Rocky’s verse trampled all over the most poignant part of the song leaving it more than just a little lacklustre and trendy for trendy’s sake.

Teaming up for their runaway hit ‘Fancy’ Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX returned to the stage to then treat the audience to Iggy’s latest single ‘Beg For It’ that should have been accompanied by Danish singer MO. MO’s lack of presence was noted as the track was performed and yet again still feels like a budget version of ‘Fancy’ on Iggy’s part stifling the sheer talent of emerging artist MO.

I won’t even go into Pitbull’s performance because let’s be real, was he ever relevant? And why do people still think he holds any relevance in the modern music industry? His only talent is wearing nasty suits, having an overly shiny head and wearing sunglasses in the least appropriate place possible; INSIDE! Don’t even get me started on his so called ‘songs’ which seem to all consist of some Latino inspired mumbling and some deeply cringy odes to partying the night away and raising or cups to the sky… Just no.
