Shannon Jinks is a 19 year-old second year Media and Communications student. Here she talks about her role as the Leicester Media School rep.

What does your role include?

My role is all about helping course reps solve course-based or university-wide issues at a higher level than they are able to. My role specifically, is being the school rep for Leicester Media School in the faculty of technology, i’m one of three school reps representing technology and I’m really enjoying it so far. My role includes, attending meetings, collecting data based on issues that have been brought to me, and really just being there for the course reps, making sure they know they can come to me with anything and I’ll be there to help them.

How do you work with other school reps?

I work with the other school reps in my faculty to try and solve all problems as quickly as possible and we have a Facebook group set up for course reps in the Faculty of Technology to feed back to us on. It is really important that as many reps contribute as possible, really because we want our faculty to thrive and have as few problems as possible.

What do you do in your meetings?

As a School Rep, I sit in on a few different meetings, some more specific to the school I represent and some more about the Faculty as a whole. In the meetings, we discuss student matters and as a school rep, this is where I get to do all the talking and pitch what the course reps have told me, and offer solutions that are then taken away and considered, and fed back to me on in the next meeting. Sometimes this process is slow but it’s great to watch the progress.

Why did you decide to become a school rep?

I decided to become a school rep as I enjoy providing help and support to students. It’s a very rewarding position, I get to see student issues become resolved and love feeding back good news to course reps in my faculty.

What have you achieved as a school rep?

As a school rep, I feel I have already achieved so much and I’m only half way through. I try and make myself as approachable as possible to the reps in my faculty, providing feedback as frequently as I can, and update them on progress after very meeting.

What goals do you have for the rest of your time as a school rep?

For the rest of my time as a school rep, I really want to see some of the bigger issues become resolved and get more reps involved.
