Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory Of Everything.

Directed by James Marsh and based on Jane Wilde Hawking’s memoir, Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, the film The Theory of Everything allows us a glimpse into the life of Stephen Hawking and his first wife, Jane Wilde, from when the two first met through to his diagnosis of motor neuron disease, and the difficulties the couple faced as well as Hawking’s success in physics.

Originally going into the film with the idea that I would see more of a depiction of Hawking’s career in physics, I was surprised to find that it was, in fact, more of a love story between Hawking and Wilde and the struggles the two faced that came with his ever-growing illness, with a smattering of science thrown in for good measure. Do not let the idea of this being a love story deter you, however; this is still a wonderful film to watch, and still allows us a look into the great life of Stephen Hawking’s, both in struggle and success.

The film itself is beautifully directed and just as well acted, with both Eddie Redmayne (as Stephen Hawking) and Felicity Jones (as Jane Wilde) leading the film with stellar performances that were both emotional and moving. Redmayne’s depiction of Stephen Hawking has to be one of the most memorable performances I have seen in years, holding undeniable talent that is sure to see him go far in the future of British cinema. Jones, too, was especially moving here, showing the wear of a loving wife, having her own struggle with caring for her husband and children, alone. Together, both Redmayne and Jones held a wonderful performance, and truly brought the story to life.

The Theory of Everything, though it is not as scientific as one would hope, is still a great film to go and see if you are a fan of biographical films or Stephen Hawking himself. It is moving, filled with incredible talent in the form of Redmayne and Jones and, in every way possible, a heart-rendering movie that I would happily go and see myself again. If you have not had a chance to see it yet, then definitely give it a chance – it is truly a winning movie, and Redmayne will surely astound you.
