DMU Squash have had a fantastic season, not only entering the Leicester Squash League but also winning their BUCS league and claiming the title.
Despite thier unfortunate loss at last years varsity in which they conceeded their trophy from the previous year, DMU Squash have their eyes set on the prize and are ready to reclaim their varsity title.
DMU Squash
DMU competed in the BUCS Midlands Squash League 3B whilst University of Leicester compete one league above them in the BUCS Midlands League 2A. However after winning their league this sseason, which only included one narrow loss against University of Bedfordshire (Luton) Men’s 1st, they will now be in the same league grade as varsity rivals, University of Leicester.
The Demon spoke to Aaron Kenney, DMU Squash Captain on his final varsity game and what he hopes to achieve with his team.

How has this season gone for you?
This season has been an amazing season for DMU Squash. We won BUCS league for the first time ever with only dropping one or two games. We came first by 7 points I think, a score we’re very proud of.
How has the team line up changed from last year?
The line-up has changed quite a bit. We’ve lost 2 of our top players but gained more players for that. We’re a stronger team than last year too, and it’s a more even team compared to University of Leicester’s team as well.
How have you been preparing for varsity?
Since the start of the year we’ve had coaching every. Everyone has been a lot more dedicated – everyone has trained hard since the start of the year, not just varsity season. Everyone has been putting in 100%. All of the 1sts team has been playing in the Leicestershire leagues for Leicester Squash Club and higher – because DMU is in a lower league – and then the 2nds team has been playing for DMU in the Leicester leagues, making sure that they get the training against people their level so that our higher players are playing higher standard players.
Predictions for this year?
I reckon 1st team’s games are going to be close. It’s going to be a really even contest. I think it’s going to be decided our number 2, number 3 and number 4 players. For number 5 we don’t have a clue what we’re coming up against, same with 4 really, but I feel quite comfortable with 4. Second team could go either way. It’s going to be close but also a big improvement. We got white-washed last year, but this is going to be a competitive year.
