Jessica Okwuonu

VP Welfare and Community Officer

Jessica Okwuonu  has resigned from her position at the Student’s Union as VP Welfare and Community Officer with immediate effect.

She says she has left due to personal reasons.

Jessica has been with the SU for 15 months, having first joined the team in 2017. During her term she worked hard for the benefit of students, working on a number of campaigns. She has worked on events for Black History Month, encouraged women to take leadership roles, and was among the first Drinkaware crew.

Jessica was also a huge force of change in the SU and the university. During her time at university she set up the Cheek2Cheek society in an attempt to promote happiness and wellbeing among students. Her most recent achievement was launching DSU’s #NotOnMyCampus campaign in Berlin to reflect the university’s view of anti-discrimination.

Her resignation leaves 2 full-time officers (Derrick Mensah and Mollie Footitt) and 13 Student Champions as DSU’s representatives, pending a review of their democratic processes following 2018’s highly controversial elections which saw several officers-elect face allegations of cheating, and ultimately resigning their roles.

Demon FM’s Head of News, Tom Fair, spoke to Mollie and Derrick about her achievements and what happens with the SU now. You can listen to the 2 minute audio clip on the Demon FM twitter here: https://twitter.com/DemonFMNews/status/1052172085659934721

The SU has assured students that student welfare is still at the top of their agender and that Jessica’s resignation does not change this.

Here at The Demon and Demon Media we would like to take this opportunity to thank Jessica Okwuonu for all she has done for us as students and wish her all the best in the future.
