The 77th Golden Globe Awards gala took place on the 5th of January. The ceremony was hosted by Ricky Gervais who, as always, caused a lot of laughs with his witty jokes.

Gervais shared the stage with other presenters, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, and many more. All the best members of the movie-industry gathered together in The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California to celebrate the great movie event.

The awards for 25 categories were handed out that night, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which Tom Hanks received.

The first set of categories revolved around TV series, one of them being the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Which Stellan Skarsgard won for his role of Boris Szczerbina in Chernobyl. Skarsgard is well-known for his role in the musical Mamma Mia!, as Bill, one of Sophie’s fathers.

Patricia Arquette was the recipient of the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award for her realistic impersonation of Dee Dee Blanchard in The Act. The TV series is based on the true story of Dee Dee and the toxic relationship with her daughter, Gypsy.

Subsequently, the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy was awarded to Ramy Youssef for his role in the autobiographical TV series titled Ramy.

In Ramy, Ramy is trying to find a balance between his Muslim society, millennial friends, and God in his New Jersey neighbourhood. Youssef took sole responsibility for this series, as he was not only an actor but also director, producer, and scriptwriter.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was the laureate of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy award for showcasing her brilliant acting skills in Fleabag. The series is about a young woman, living in London and dealing with her life after a tragedy.

The next category was Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama, awarded to Brian Cox for his acting in Succession, a story of a dysfunctional, American family. He played Logan Roy, the founder and CEO of the media conglomerate Waystar Royco, and father of the Roy Family.

Olivia Colman collected the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown: a series focusing on the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television went to Russel Crowe. He played Roger Ailes, who was the founder of Fox News, in the seven-episode TV series The Loudest Voice.

Whereas, Michelle Williams received the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television award for her rendition of Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon. Verdon is known as one of the best Broadway choreographers and was in a relationship with influential choreographer/director Bob Fosse, played by Sam Rockwell. Rockwell was also nominated for this role in the actor category.

Unsurprisingly, the prize for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television was given to the biggest hit of last year: Chernobyl. The mini-series retold the historic events of the 1986 nuclear power plant explosion in the Soviet Union.

The categories for the best TV series were divided into Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, won by Fleabag, and Best Television Series – Drama, handed to the team of The Succession.

The upcoming categories were those revolving around movies released this year. The first category was Best Original Song – Motion Picture, won by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin for the recreation of ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again’ from Rocketman. Taron Egerton received the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his stellar performance of Sir Elton. Rocketman is a musical-fantasy biopic shaping the story of Elton John’s career from his youth.

The Best Original Score – Motion Picture was awarded to Hildur Guðnadóttir, composer for the score for Joker, a legendary film creation. The role, in the past played by Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson; this year Joaquin Phoenix created his version of this character.

Phoenix also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by An Actor in a Motion Picture. Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language award went to Parasite, a South Korean production which this year made a huge impression on audiences around the world.

The official Golden Globe website describes the movie as, ‘All unemployed, Ki-taek and his family take a peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks, as they ingratiate themselves into their lives and get entangled in an unexpected incident’. They are the favourite to win this year’s Oscar for the Best Foreign Movie.

Another important category was Best Motion Picture – Animated and the laureate of this award was Missing Link. The animation tackles the story of Mr. Link who hires the explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help him find his long lost family in the valley of Shangri-La.

Quentin Tarantino received his third Golden Globe award this year for Best Screenplay of Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. The director encapsulated the history of cinema in one movie. Telling the tragic story of an actor and his friend, a stunt man, who are trying to fight their way back into the film industry. Brad Pitt, who played the stunt man, was awarded the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. The film itself also received Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award.

Even though Quentin Tarantino also directed this movie, the Golden Globe for Best Director- Motion Picture was won by Sam Mendes for 1917. The film follows two soldiers in the First World War tasked with delivering a message on enemy territory. The film also received the prize for Best Motion Picture – Drama. 

The award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture was handed to Laura Dern for playing the lawyer Nora Fanshaw in Marriage Story- a compelling movie about a slowly dissolving marriage.

The last award goes to Renee Zellweger, who received Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her outstanding portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy.

This year’s Golden Globe ceremony rather suggests that the Oscars might be very interesting.
