The MCU, (Marvel Cinematic Universe) took the world by storm as it grew through the Teenie’s era, starting back with Iron Man in 2008 and now in the form of TV shows via Disney Plus in their Phase 4 era. As you may have realised, Marvel is an ever-expanding colossus in entertainment but even more so in the gaming industry as of late with recent outings such as Marvel’s Spiderman and Marvel’s Avengers hitting the shelves over the past few years. With Marvel’s Wolverine and the Spiderman sequel releasing in 2023 and beyond. However, nothing could have prepared us for their next outing in video games with the announcement earlier this year of Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) in video game form!
Featuring Star Lord and the guardian’s debut in the videogame-verse of Marvel adaptations this October, however not like we remember in our beloved MCU, these characters are similar but with their own flare. Eidos Montreal, the developers behind (GoTG) have took it upon themselves to be creative with their versions of the guardians, all of which highlight their unique take on the established characters. To be clear Spiderman, Avengers and now Guardians of the Galaxy are all disconnected ventures, they seem to be testing the water for a Marvel Game-atic Universe in a way, so we will see what the future holds in that regard but for now I am all for an adventure with our favourite galactic outcasts.
The story of this game is especially important, much like Spiderman for the PS4 (2018), it is a single player narrative driven experience. The focus will be our titular anti-heroes after an interstellar war has wreaked havoc across the universe year prior, leaving the guardians to do what they do best with exploiting the situation in their own ways to gain a quick space buck while helping some people along the way. After an introductory period that promises to remind us about why we love these characters, they end up becoming embroiled in an incident that drives them into further dire situations that inevitably lead to even grander adventures with an expected playtime of around 30 hours total.
The game will feature the 5 main guardians (Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket), no signs of Mantis or Nebula joining the crew this time around but potentially in its sequel? Let’s hope for the best. You will spend your time exclusively playing as the main man himself, Star Lord with his trusty elemental blasters while simultaneously controlling your fellow party members passively like Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake. Inputting commands and button prompts as you play for special abilities, powers, and interactions, all highlighting a seamless gameplay loop. It seems a very cinematic experience to say the least!
Alas no (GoTG) media would be complete without a killer soundtrack to accompany it, I mean at this point it’s a given that song choices in those movies and mentioned in their comics is what makes it such a unique property within Marvels catalogue. Eidos promises nothing short of what we expect with tracks from Ricky Astley, Motley Crue, Simple Minds, Blondie, Def Leppard, Bonnie Tyler and more. The developers have even gone on record to mention unique custom-made tracks for the game from the band ‘’Star Lord’’, where Quill gets his title from, will be featured throughout the story.
But when, how and what way can I get my hands on Star Lords debut adventures with his weird band of friends? Well, the good news is, you will not be waiting long at all. Guardians of the Galaxy developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Marvel will be released on October 26th, 2021, for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/X and PC for the price of £50-£60 depending on the chosen platform. So do not be shy if you are hooked on the feeling of getting this debut adventure with the guardians and want to have some spectacular adventures with the guardians, make sure to grab your copy ASAP!
