Daniel Tinkler, who oversees the ‘My Uni Pal’ mentoring scheme, took part in the Wacky Nation Rock, Paper, Scissors championship over the weekend.

Daniel said: “One of my old house mates asked me if I wanted to enter and it seemed funny so we entered as a group for a bit of a laugh.

“I entered with very little expectations, all I wanted was to win one match so I would be able to tell my friends I had got somewhere, anything on top of that was a bonus.”

Daniel entered the competition with very little expectations, he played only two games in preparation, both of which he lost.

He said: “This is the first time I have entered a competition like this and somehow I won.

“I would love to sit here and say I have some telecommunication powers and that’s how I did it, there is some psychology in it, trying to read peoples body language and facial expressions to try and work out what their next move is but I was completely psyched out by the guy I was in the final with.

“He beat me on the mind games, I just tried to focus more on what I was doing and tried to enjoy it.”

The weekend’s competition consisted of eight rounds where Daniel beat off stiff competition to be named as the UK’s Rock, Paper, Scissors champion.

Daniel said: “It was surreal to win, it was completely unexpected but it made me very happy, I jumped up and down and showed off far too much.”

The prize consisted of a trophy, £100 and a bottle of Prosecco that he hasn’t drunk yet because he is taking part in Stoptober.

“I will defend this title next year and I have a provisional invite to go and play in Sweden next year if I can get there and they still want me” added Daniel.

“Who knows, maybe I will look for other silly championships, I’m no good at buckaroo but maybe I could try hangman if there is a competition for that.”
