The CommitmentsThis fun, eccentric and witty musical had the audience laughing, clapping and in the end dancing, encasing the very notion of ‘soul’. Inspired by Roddy Doyle’s 1987 bestselling novel and Alan Parker’s film adaptation, the production combines the in-depth story line and undeniable energy of a hit movie. Following the lives of a working class Irish band in Dublin fighting to prove that they are, without doubt, the soul kings of Europe. Set in the 1980’s, the whirlwind scenes merge together old-school bedrooms, homes and dingy laundrettes in a cleverly designed set that keeps you guessing.

Rocking over 20 soul crowd pleasers such as “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” and “I Heard it through the Grapevine”, the largely unknown cast certainly deliver. Unreliable frontman Deco, smitten band founder Ben and the rest of the band hope to escape their dreary homes on the council estate for stardom, however with awkward love triangles, conflicting personalities and the odd head-butt – it doesn’t run smoothly. However, all is forgotten with stunning vocals and music that could impress an audience expecting professional musicians.

This hilariously unpredictable musical is at some points chaotic with moments easily missed, but you’re soon pulled in again with the brow-raising jokes in this gritty show. With a (hilariously) large amount of swearing, that shocks yet works within this hilarious story, Jamie Llyod’s direction leaves you touched and energised.

Expect a rare mix of laughing, cringing and the odd shiver down your spine as this creative plot keeps you guessing from beginning to end.
