There’s nothing like the feeling of walking into a cinema, buying a ticket, ordering a drink at the bar and taking it into the screen.
This is my weekly routine when I visit Phoenix Cinema, Leicester’s one-of-a-kind independent venue for film and digital art. From the moment you enter the lobby, you are immersed in a relaxed atmosphere unlike any other. If regular customers are not interacting with the friendly and helpful staff, they are enjoying a tasty meal in the venue’s Café Bar, settling down for a film or heading upstairs to attend one of the many short courses led by industry professionals.
As a student, it is hard to find places which feed my love of film without breaking the bank – Phoenix provides a space in which people of all ages can come together to enjoy the latest blockbusters, art-house films from around the world and the best of the West End, without the multiplex price.
Located just a few minutes from the City Centre in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, Phoenix provides students not only with a varied programme of films and courses to enjoy but a comfortable space to kick back and relax – to take your mind off deadlines and workloads and unwind with friends in front of the big screen.
The venue has two screens plus educational spaces for workshops and seminars. Its partnership with DMU’s Film Studies courses offers students amazing opportunities to attend lectures outside the university walls. Phoenix works together with students to produce events within the curriculum such as The DMU Film Festival and the Leicester East Asian Film Festival, which are hosted with the Phoenix’s help and offer great opportunities to volunteer and learn about the daily operations of film exhibition.
As if that weren’t enough, the cinema also offers exclusive discounts for students on individual films, events and courses that you won’t find anywhere else. £6 for each film doesn’t sound too expensive, does it? Especially with an added 10% off all food and drink. Phoenix caters for all tastes, whether it’s big-budget Hollywood blockbusters or smaller, independent films which showcase the best in world cinema and hidden gems you might have missed.
Film history buffs will rejoice as they also show classic films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to the French New Wave. The cinema’s programming process ensures you never see the same film twice (unless you really want to) and events like the intriguing Mystery Film or Film Quiz are available for the casual film fan and the most avid cineaste.
With a wide variety of films, events and courses to choose from, why not choose Phoenix for your next cinema trip? Everyone’s welcome to share the magic of the movies and immerse themselves in a wonderful world of entertainment. This is cinema. This is community. This is Phoenix.
