Oscar Pistorius

Paralympic hero Oscar Pistorius was today accused by prosecutors of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in cold blood in his house in South Africa.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel claimed that Pistorius, a double amputee, put on his artificial legs and fired four shots into the bathroom within which his girlfriend was cowering behind the locked door.

Pistorius visibly broke down in the courtroom as the accusations were squared at him.

At one point Pistorius’ sobbing caused magistrate Desmond Nair to halt proceedings for several minutes.

The defence claims that Pistorius did not put on his artificial legs and instead moved into the bathroom.

Believing an intruder to be behind the locked toilet door, he fired four shots through it shouting for whoever was behind it to get out of his house.

He then shouted for Steenkamp to call the police and when she did not respond, he used a cricket bat to beat down the toilet door to find her slumped on the floor, he claims.

Pistorius has said he kept the gun used to kill Steenkamp under his bed because of previous break-ins and death threats, thought this is a common occurrence in South Africa.

The athlete, who starred in both the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London told the court via an affidavit: “I was absolutely mortified by the events and devastating loss of my beloved Reeva.”

The hearing has been adjourned until Wednesday for both sides to build their cases.
