In 1948, the first Costume Institute Ball was held in New York. It was – and still is – an event that the entire world craves to be invited to. Hosted by Vogue, the Ball (also known as The Met Ball) is full to the brim with to-die-for tuxedos and dresses that make your eyes water with jealousy.

This year, the Metropolitan Museum hosted its annual fashion exhibit at the Costume institute with the theme being; Punk. This prompted a lot of celebrities to pull out all of the stops with gowns which didn’t fail to surprise.

Celebrities took well to studs and safety pins as part of their gowns and accessories. But while most of the ladies took the punk theme to an extreme – Madonna being the first person that comes into mind – others stuck with little detailing that resembles the subcultural movement. But who wore what and most importantly: who rocked the punk look to perfection?

Cara Delevingne wore an all-black dress made by Burberry, that had a low plunge at the front and sleeves that were covered in spikes and studs. Her heavily lined eyes and hair that was half down, half plaited, created the perfect punk-themed marriage.

One of my recent fashion idols, Rooney Mara, opted for a custom-made white gown by Givenchy teamed plum lips and slicked back hair. Her choice of dress as well as her simplistic make-up and hair choice, made punk look pretty.

Anne Hathaway not only surprised us all with her quite revealing Valentino gown, but also with her new hair colour. The Les Miserables actress arrived on the red carpet with blonde hair perfectly styled for the event.

Wearing a custom-made Topshop dress, Nicole Richie took to the red carpet showing off her sprayed-white hair. The dress was loved by so many people that Topshop kindly decided that it would be available to buy from autumn of this year. Similarly, they decided to do the same with the black dress worn by Jourdan Dunn as well. Lucky us!

The Hannah Montana-turned-‘Rapunzel with a Mohawk’ star, Miley Cyrus, certainly wowed us with her mesh Marc Jacobs’s dress that screamed punk – as well as her spiky hair! Miley told Hilary Rhoda that she was surprised that the dress fit first time. “I want to wear this every day because it just feels so good and it was amazing to not have to try on so many times. This was the first one and no alterations, which is rare!” Miley’s look was definitely my favourite due to taking punk and mixing it with her typical sexiness aura.

The Met Gala, like most other red carpet events, is something that shows real potential with style and creativity. The theme also showed celebrities ability to be versatile with what they wore bringing the majority of them out of their comfort zones.  So with a lot of these A-listers looking amazing, it’s certain that we should already be looking forward to next year’s event.
