What an interesting month of music news! We’ve had a new viral video, unexpected band splits and long-awaited show announcements! So without further ado, here are your top music highlights for October:
10. Taylor Swift and Jon Bon Jovi to perform at Royal charity gig
The artists performing at the exclusive Centrepoint Winter Whites Gala – to be attended by our very own Wills and Kate – were announced earlier this month. The likes of pop princess Taylor Swift and the legendary Jon Bon Jovi are amongst the names announced, however with only 200 tickets available at a whopping £500 each, I wouldn’t expect any of us to be getting hold of one! Fingers crossed they release videos of the night!
9. Dizzee Rascal on Miley Cyrus
As the Cyrus debate continues in the blogosphere, British rapper Dizzee Rascal has described Miley as “a really clever girl”. In an interview with the Daily Star, the ‘Bassline Junkie’ singer said her success was down the quality of her music, not the controversy of her videos.
Rascal said: “They say it’s because of her video, but the songs always come first.”
8. Timberlake postpones start of 20/20 World Tour
To the upset of many fans, Justin Timberlake has delayed the start of the 20/20 Experience World Tour because of ‘extended rehearsals’. Dates in Montreal (October 31) and Boston (November 1) have been moved to summer 2014, which now means that the first date of the tour will take place in New York City at the Brooklyn Barclays Centre on November 6.
The tour will visit venues across the UK over 9 dates between March and April 2014.
7. No new album from Beyoncé
Pop queen Beyoncé will not release a new album until it “feels right to her”, says producer Pharrell Williams. Despite this he mentioned that the upcoming album – the first since the birth of baby Blue-Ivy – is “almost done”.
Speaking to Billboard on working with the US diva, Williams said: “B’s album is crazy… She’s very particular… And she’s not going to put it out until it’s ready and feels like its right to her.”
6. Ellie Goulding to sing the official Children In Need 2013 song
UK superstar Ellie Goulding has confirmed that she is to release the official 2013 Children in Need single. ‘How Long Will I Love You’ will be released on November 10, in support of this year’s campaign. Originally featured as a bonus track on her latest album Halcyon Days, the single will give a minimum of 20p from all purchases to the charity.
BBC’s Children in Need live show will air on BBC One on Friday, November 15 at 7:30pm.
5. Gaga single ‘Do What You Want’ tops the chart
The latest single from Lady Gaga, ‘Do What You Want feat. R Kelly’, soared to the number one spot on the UK iTunes chart this month. Taken from her upcoming album, ARTPOP, the single topped the chart just a few hours after release. It overtook Lorde’s ‘Royals’, which moved down to number two.
ARTPOP is due for worldwide release on November 11.
4. Britney releases ‘Work B**ch!’
The long-awaited comeback single from pop diva Britney Spears, entitled ‘Work B**ch!’ debuted a day earlier than announced on October 15. The track is from her upcoming eighth studio album, Britney Jean. Co-written by fellow star Will.i.am, the song received generally positive reviews, and was described by some as the next “club banger”.
Britney Jean is due for release November 29.
3. Foo Fighters FINALLY announce a show in Mexico!
Having never played a headline show in the country, Dave Grohl and Co. thought it only right to start the next chapter of their career by playing the country’s capital, Mexico City, in December. Speculation began after the band tweeted a link – foofightersmexico.com – from their verified Twitter account, which simply showed their logo filled with a Mexican flag and the phrase ‘Diciembre 2013’ beneath.
As more strange tweets began showing on their Twitter feed, images changing on the aforementioned website, and enigmatic videos appeared on YouTube, rumours continued to grow. Finally, the Foos confirmed that they would be playing a show in the capital on December 13, with support coming from band of the moment, The National.
Welcome back, boys!
2. Jonas Brothers SPLIT?!
The much-loved ex-Disney stars Nick, Joe and Kevin – better known as the Jonas Brothers – confirmed speculation on a possible split via Twitter this month. Speculation began after the band’s Twitter was deleted earlier in the month, quickly followed by Joe tweeting: “Please hold while we get out s**t together.”
Looks like we may be grabbing the tissues and waving goodbye to a childhood favourite soon!
*Update 01/11/13* Since the publication of this article, the Jonas Brothers have confirmed that they have now parted company, and that their next album V will now go unreleased. See the band’s official statement here.
1. Ylvis and ‘The Fox’
Just when you thought you’d escaped another person mentioning Ylvis, here I am to disappoint you! I would be a madman if I didn’t mention this viral video of the month. The video has gained such a level of fame that it is currently in the top 50 viral videos of all time (say unrulymedia), with over 170,000,000 views and 12,000,000 shares. The creators of the video say they find success ‘strange’, however the only strange thing I can think is: what does the fox really say?
