‘#GetMeOnAir, what is that?’

That’s the big question on everyone’s lips on campus as Demon Media promote their RAG event over every possible angle of social media. But why are we doing it?

Months ago three members of DemonFM’s Station Management Team sat in a room in Queens Building and came up with a truly bizarre and utterly impossible concept to raise money for charity.

Some say it’s a Big Brother/I’m A Celebrity mix:

We’re now two days away from this ‘impossible’ event starting. Better still we’ve got everyone on campus and in Leicester talking about it.

Even better than that, we’ve raised nearly £800 for two amazing causes already and the event hasn’t started yet!

Bradley Duggan, one of the organisers of #GetMeOnAir, said: “It’s unbelievable to see the donations that we have already received.

“These are two amazing charities that everyone can relate to and we are proud to be raising money for them.”

Nottingham’s Charity Hospital Trust

This is the local charity we’ve chosen to support this year. Nottingham Queens Hospital is the Major Trauma Unit for the East Midlands and is a charity very close to the heart of one of the three boys behind this event.

Chris Smith, Head of Live Music and Events at DemonFM, had a serious head injury in 2011.

He was transferred from Leicester Royal Infirmary to Nottingham Queens Hospital for specialist care where he underwent hours of surgery.

The care he received from Nottingham Hospital, like it does for many people from Leicester, Nottingham and Lincoln every day, literally saved his life.

Chris Smith said: “There is nothing that myself, friends or family can ever do to show how grateful we are but since my accident I’ve wanted to start raising money for the department that saved my life.

“I feel that now is the right time to do something before I leave Leicester and DMU, who have also been fantastic with my recovery in so many ways.”

This is why this year we’re giving a 50% split of the money we raise to help Nottingham Hospital continue to save lives and make things better for their patients and their relatives.

Chris Smith added: “Leicester A&E and Nottingham Queens were fantastic places for care and support, not only for myself but for my family and friends too.

“Without the donations and charities set up to raise money, none of this would be possible. The support and generosity of so many people already to our charity event is over-whelming and made all the efforts feel so worthwhile!”

Macmillan

Unfortunately, we all know someone who has been affected by Cancer. This includes you, me, the person next to you. We all know someone who has had cancer.

It also includes Michael Poole, one of the presenters on#GetMeOnAir, who requested we supported Macmillan.

Michael Poole said: “Two of my close friends have both lost a parent to cancer so I really wanted to get involved with helping to raise money for Macmillan.”

It is because of national charities such as Macmillan’s fantastic work that help is available to us through those difficult times.

That’s why we’ve decided to give a 50% split of all the money we raise also to Macmillan.

This is help them to improve the lives of those affected, both those living with cancer and their family and carers through specialist care, information and financial support.

So far

So far we’ve raised an incredible £755 of our £5,000 target and this is down to everyone involved – the Students’ Union’s support, the University’s support and even the Leicester Mercury who have helped to promote our charity event.

But where the true hard work lies is at the hands of all the Demon Media members.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube have all been full of members posting and sharing photos of the event, hilarious videos about why you should vote for them and the links to our precious donating page.

If by some sort of miracle you have somehow managed to miss this social media overtake then read more here http://www.demon-media.co.uk/news/getmeonair-2/ and make sure you follow the hashtag #GetMeOnAir.

Please donate any spare change you have to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/getmeonair.

The event starts 11am on Tuesday and you’ll be able to listen, watch and donate live on DemonFM’s website – www.demonfm.co.uk/getmeonair.
