This Wednesday DMU Hockey Club will host our annual ‘Charity Shop Challenge’ in which all members are asked to spend £10 each at the British Heart Foundation to find the most horrific outfits they can.

DMUHC made nothing of the social last year despite raising around £300 for various charities. This year however, many of our members were affected by the death of Dan Fenwick who suffered cardiac arrest following an asthma attack last September and we would like to show our respect by raising money for something that affected the whole university.

Shyam Bhalsod who joined hockey this year and was a very close friend of Dan’s said “I was thrilled when I found out that there would be a social for the British Heart Foundation in honour of Dan. He was the guy who could never turn down a night out, so I think he would love that we have the chance to have a great night where we are also making a contribution to a great charity. Not many people in DMU Hockey really knew Dan but it’s great to see how everyone is willing to get involved. Dan always tried to push me to join a society and after his passing I promised myself I would, even though is has been a tough year, joining hockey has been the silver lining which I owe to Dan.”

Beth Simmons, Women’s Hockey Captain who was also very close to Dan said “This alteration of our usual charity shop challenge is a fantastic idea this year as it touches many hearts within the society and around DMU. The timing is perfect with Daniel’s honorary graduation the day before the social. It’s a lovely way to honour his memory during the New Year and wonderful knowing our donations will affect many peoples life’s long after the occasion.

When Dan passed away we began to use the #drinkfordan hashtag where you would upload a picture of yourself with a drink and hashtag it with that. We plan to bring that back on the night of the charity social.”

The Charity Shop Social for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Dan Fenwick will take place on Wednesday 21 January, meeting at Soar Point at 8pm. There will be collection buckets on the night with all money raised being donated to the British Heart Foundation.
