Spotlight on Sport: DMU Saints

The DMU Saints are a successful cheerleading squad,  they have just finished an undefeated season as a result of sheer determination, dedication and intense training. The DMU Saints train hard for their sport, but also have an amazing time in doing so.  Socials every Wednesday bond the squad as its a time to be free during the week to dress up and party, there is always a theme and fun games, it’s a great time to get to know each other properly out of training times and create amazing friendships; it only gets better when the squad goes on the annual sports tour.

What were the club’s accomplishments last season?

The last year has been the best yet, DMU Saints have come out on top holding the titles, Regional, National, Grand and European champions alongside being undefeated varsity winners. This year DMU Saints were also awarded Team of The Year and Coaches of The Year, at the annual sports awards ceremony at the end of the year, this really displayed that the hard work they have put in has been recognised by the university.

What is your most memorable moment from last season?

The most memorable moment was their first win of the season, competing at the Regional Championships in Guilford, with both teams winning first place, as well as their all girl team winning overall Grand Champions and both teams receiving bids for the European Championships which they went on to win as well.

What are your aspirations for this season?

This season they aim to maintain their position by working even harder and improving their skills to remain at the top, excelling in their chosen competitions, including the varsity competition. A year ago DMU Saints got involved with Square Mile, a university project, which contributes to the society through public engagement to bring about positive change for the public good; they won the Outstanding Engagement award due to some squad members taking out time to coach a local primary school, they aim to partake in this again as well as continue being involved in charity work.

How much does it cost to join your club?

It does not cost anything to join the squad, all you need is the desire and potential; however members do need to pay towards their training and competition kit as well as competition fees. The squad does fundraisers throughout the year to help make it affordable to all members.

Why should students join your club?

The DMU Saints are one of the most successful teams on campus, they are extremely active with competitions and getting involved with events in and out of campus. They were recently invited to the Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspurs football match in the King Power stadium in August to do a presentation during half time which was an amazing experience. The DMU Saints are not all about training, they really know how to party and have an amazing team bond.
