The local American diner Jumpin’ Jacks was alive Wednesday night, 19th October, with young talent featuring Kait Baker-Smith, Will Harding, and James Neilson. The three artists took centre stage one by one to perform a selection of either original songs or covers while the audience purchased food and drink at discounted prices.

This monthly showcase of talent is just one of the many opportunities for aspiring artists to get involved in around Leicester to grow in confidence and skill performing to audiences.

Kait Baker-Smith, first year student at De Montfort University, was the first to perform beginning her set with a cover of ‘Lips are Movin’’ by Meghan Trainer. She spoke to me about the experience, saying:

‘I was a bit nervous, but knowing people had come to support me made me want to perform well.’

Getting over nerves is one of the many challenges performers face nowadays, she told me her way of getting though a performance when nerves strike.

‘I struggled to look at anyone so I focused on a statue at the back of the diner. It was cool to perform again after years off from it.’

Look out for future events like this and get involved.
