The Universities Minister Michelle Donelan has announced that students will be advised to return to in-person teaching, alongside Step 3 of the Government’s lockdown easing roadmap, no earlier than 17 May 2021.
In a written statement to students, Donelan said that this decision has been made in line with the third step of the roadmap, where most indoor settings, such as restaurants and bars, will be set to reopen.
She commented: “The movement of students across the country poses a risk for the transmission of the virus – particularly because of the higher prevalence and rates of transmission of new variants.”
Until then, all students who are not on practical or creative courses will be asked to remain where they are living and learn remotely through online learning.
However, the Government has recognised that “some students, such as those with inadequate study space and/or mental health and wellbeing issues, may need to return to their term-time address despite their teaching still being online.”
Those students with exceptional circumstances, like those outlined above, are advised to contact their Student Advice Centre.
In an update to all DMU students, the university said:
“We recognise that this will be disappointing news for many of you who will have been hoping to come back to DMU this month. DMU will continue to work with Universities UK (UUK), the representative organisation for UK universities, to press the Government to prioritise the interests of students in the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.”
Students are being encouraged to access all of the university provision available to them through Your DMU Future, which offers a range of resources, from mental health support to IT to Library services.
Those who are currently living in their term-time accommodation but are studying online still have access to the physical library and on-campus study spaces. Students should also make regular use of the Lateral Flow testing facilities at DMU, and these are available to book through the MyDMU platform.
