Need that perfect album to listen to while you go on a walk with a hot chocolate in hand? Don’t worry, Freya Gerrard has you covered.
Autumn is here – finally – and as the evenings get darker and the air gets colder, so does my playlist.
This may sound like a negative, but autumn is my favourite season, and I embrace the cold because it means I can slip on my UGG’s, put my earphones in and drown out the world with my autumn playlist.
Although they might be some of the most gut-wrenching songs, this is the perfect time of year to listen to them. Prepare to push away that seasonal depression because you sure will feel something when you listen to my top 3 autumn albums.
Coming in at number one is Hozier’s self-titled album. Arguably one of the best albums of our generation, and I’m ready to die on this hill.
Not only does Hozier have one of the most magical voices that will ever grace your ears, but he also writes some of the most beautiful music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. There isn’t a single skip on the whole entire album, and all of the songs are of such high standard I don’t even think I could pick a favourite.
Whilst it includes one of Hozier’s most popular songs Take Me To Church, which has over 3 billion streams on Spotify, it has twelve other songs that will just make you want to lay down and stare at the ceiling whilst you take in his lyrical talent.
Not to brag – I’m definitely bragging – but I saw Hozier live a couple of years ago and his voice was just as amazing in person as it sounds in the songs which I personally think makes all the difference when listening to an artist.
The next album on my list is the ep I. from Cigarettes After Sex. The ep only has four songs on it. But imagine listening to them on full blast through your earphones whilst walking through a park with orange leaves covering the ground.
You can picture it can’t you, the leaves crunching underneath your feet whilst Dreaming Of You is playing. It almost has that 2000’s rom-com feel, the whole idea of romanticising the change of season and the colder breeze in the air.
When I said at the start of this that these albums would make you feel something I wasn’t lying. Listening to Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby is bound to have you sitting in silence, just taking it all in.
And if it doesn’t, well I question your music taste because the song is genuinely just a beautifully written song about the start of a connection with someone. And, if there was ever a perfect season to fall in love it would be autumn.
The third and final album on my list is So Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star. Since autumn is the season of Halloween and well, it is October, I feel like this album deserved a spot on my list because it really captures the feeling of cold autumn nights and has a very witchy feeling about it.
Just picture yourself in your bedroom, autumn scented candle burning and wind howling through the windows and suddenly Into Dust starts playing. Perfection.
It’s like the ultimate girlhood moment to have Mazzy Star playing through the speaker, most likely having crystals on your bedside table and incense burning – I know that isn’t just me we all had our phase. Although the songs are a lot slower than some might like, they are peaceful and calming to listen to. It’s like free therapy.
That concludes my top three autumn albums, and you may be questioning my mental state right now, but these are just a few albums that I think truly capture the feeling of autumn.
