Where the first bank holiday weekend of the month is now at an end, the sun doesn’t seem like it wants to stop shinning. Are we finally going to get a summer we’ve been all been dreaming of for years, or is it just another mini heat wave, and it’ll soon be back to grey skies and torrential rain?
With it being exam period at the moment for us students, looking out our windows and seeing the glorious weather seems like utter torture. However everyone deserves a break now and then don’t they? And I have the perfect guide to help you look your best this spring/summer.
Where I always encourage personal style it is always good to have a few guidelines and pieces to start you off. So below are a few spring and summer basics that you must be aware of have in your wardrobe this season and some every Spring/Summer.
Shorts
It is very rare that the weather allows us the opportunity to wear shorts, but on days like this, it is the perfect opportunity to get your legs out. Last year especially saw a growth in tailored shorts, offering a smart alternative to other styles, such as cargo shorts. Tailored shorts easily enhance your silhouette. They will add class and style to any given outfit whether you pair them with a printed tee or a formal shirt. When buying shorts it’s always good to make sure you have the right length; as you don’t want them too short or reaching way below knee length. Shorts should reach just before or on the top of your kneecap, any longer you’re heading for a fashion faux pas. Also don’t be afraid to go bold with colours and styles either.
Bold printed shirts and Tees
Where last year saw such an influx in tribal and Aztec patterned shirts and tees, this spring/summer designers and high street brands are pushing the boundaries of print further. Following on from the 90’s trends making their come back at the beginning of this year Topman especially have a range of dip-dyed denim shirts which are perfect to add colour and a slight grunge trend to your spring/summer wardrobe. River Island are the ones though taking it one step further with even bolder prints such as tribal patterns and bright colours. Even though some patterned and coloured shirts may seem like taking a step to far; be brave and just go for it.
Shoes
Shoes always seem to be a tricky element to a man’s wardrobe during spring/summer. Where the obvious choice seems to be the archetypal sandal/ flip flop menswear has developed so much over the past few years that unless sat beside a pool or walking on a beach they should not be worn out in public (this includes the biggest faux pas of them all socks and sandals). Alternatives such as espadrilles, boat shoes and canvas shoes have made their way to the menswear scene over the past few years, this year offers a new alternative and must have; the suede derby. Suede shoes offer a lighter alternative to leather or canvas shoes as well as transcending any outfit. They can be worn with pretty much any outfit; match with invisible socks shorts and a tee for a casual look or a pair of chinos and a crisp oxford shirt for more of a preppy smarter look. Make sure that if you match any form of shoe with shorts, that you avoid any socks apart from trainer or invisible for a smarter look.
Other items to look out for this spring/summer:
Denim: in the form of jeans, jackets and even shirts. ( try to avoid matching all three together)
Chinos: are and probably always will be a menswear staple, with their versatility and ability to smarten up any outfit; they are perfect for cool summer days and evenings.
Sunglasses: When choosing your sunglasses, try to spend a little bit more as even though you may not wear them a lot, when you do they can either make or break an outfit.
Make the most of the sun whilst it’s still shinning and make sure you look fashionable and on trend when doing so!
Good luck in all of your exams!
