Last season it was the bold, black and white monochrome prints that took over the catwalk. However this autumn see’s the return of the traditional tartan print, which was popular in the 90’s making its way into our wardrobe this season.

The plaids graced the catwalk with the definitive huge laundry-bag square print coat by Celine accompanied with leather over-the-knee boots. Tommy Hilfiger’s wasn’t afraid to pair checks with checks as his collection gave off a city chic look with its sleek houndstooth print on coat, dress and hat. Michael Kors took his houndtooth print in a ultra-blue top and cigarette pant making a bold statement onto the catwalk. Marc Jacobs on the other hand takes a more subtle approach with the blue coloured tartan print coat with a pastel blue shirt and black pencil skirt to complete this vintage look.  Saint Laurent brings out the classic school girl dress onto the catwalk with the Scottish highlander plaid print in a grunge modern twist.

The trend even transitioned into menswear, with Valentino’s collections being the prime example. With tailoring on the skinny-legged suit pants, the elegant grey of the tartan turns the classic pattern to a modern look. A Sherlock Holmes inspired cape was featured in the collection as well as the windcheater style tartan jumpers in navy and green. Moschino’s collection brought big fur-collared coats to life along with the plaid prints on the catwalks back in Milan.

Celebrities also seem to be keen on this plaid look as The Saturday’s singer Mollie King was spotted in a demure plaid dress as she arrived at the Radio 1 studios. The Duchess of Cambridge herself, Kate Middleton was in Trendy Tartan when she was caught wearing the print coat by Moloh earlier this year.

The catwalk looks have made their way to high street stores with New Look giving us their Red Tartan Check Skater Skirt and Topshop with their Check Cigarette Trousers. The brand Freak of Nature gives glamour to the grunge look with their New York Doll Pinafore Dress in Tartan which can be worn with leather biker boots. Even the print has made its way into footwear as ASOS gives us Portland Chunky Platform Shoes.
