Hello, Music Fans!
Across this past week on Demon Music, writers Elliott and Natalie have been discussing their artists and albums to look out for as we venture ever deeper into 2014. As such, it was only appropriate to give the rest of the team a shout, by offering their picks in this week’s Monday Playlist, giving your ears one hell of a treat! So, if your New Years’ resolution was to discover some new music, hit that play button below and make sure that you succeed!
We’re well into 2014 now, which means that it is the return of RAG (Raise and Give) Week across DMU campus. Our friends over at Demon FM are partaking in a Big Brother meets I’m a Celebrity… style event by the name of #GetMeOnAir, with 10 pairs of presenters battling out for some coveted air time on Demon FM! During the battle, they’ll be competing in bizarre challenges in the green room and raising money for two brilliant causes, Macmillan Cancer Care and Nottingham Hospitals Charity Research Fund. You can read more about the event by clicking here.
Our very own Harry Dean, Hollie Copas and Tom Elliott are all involved in the event, so we would like to wish them the very best of luck in getting behind that mic, and a round of applause for volunteering their time. Of course, our luck and applause also extends to the rest of the contestants! Well done all of you!
That’s it for another Monday Playlist, but remember that you can always follow our writers on the Twittersphere by clicking their Twitter handles below, as well as following our content uploads by searching the hashtag #DemonMusic.
‘Til next week,

1. ‘Doing The Most’ – RDGLDGRN
Nicola Allen (@NicoClaireAllen) says: “I’m REALLY trying to get the word out about this trio at the moment, because their music is INCREDIBLE. If you love your old-school hip-hop with a dash of indie guitar, RDGLDGRN are the band for you. ‘Doing The Most’ is the latest release from their debut self-titled album, built on laid back verses that fuse seamlessly with the most incredibly catchy chorus I’ve heard for a long time. Still not sure about whether you should listen to them? Foo Fighters’ frontman and ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl played drums on their album, whilst super producer Pharrell Williams is also a good friend of theirs. Now if those name drops don’t get you to even sample their stuff, I don’t know what will.”
2. ‘Scream (Funk My Life Up)’ – Paolo Nutini
Nicola says: “He’s been gone since 2009, having begun a personal struggle with the strain of being in the limelight but finally my favourite Scottish songwriter Paolo Nutini is back in action! New single ‘Scream (Funk My Life Up)’ from his forthcoming album Caustic Love is so new that it was only given its premiere a couple of hours ago on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show. On first listen, the single sounds just as funky as his older material and re-embraces his notable, thick Scottish vocals throughout.”
3. ‘Ways To Go’ – Grouplove
Elliott Plevin (@elliottplev) says: “Even though the video for this song was released 7 months ago, Grouplove’s new album Spreading Rumours is only just around the corner; I have pre-ordered it on iTunes and I can’t wait! Grouplove have a very indie-rock meets hippy-dippy style, and it’s certainly an interesting fusion. Lead singers’ Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper have really interesting, rough vocals that pair somewhat nicely together. It should definitely be an interesting year for the band!”
4. ‘Love More Worry Less’ – Bipolar Sunshine
Natalie Whitehouse (@_natwhitehouse) says: “After the split of indie-ska band Kid British in 2012, vocalist Adio Marchant didn’t waste time in getting back into the music game. Last year he collaborated with prouder Jazz Purple and created his solo project Bipolar Sunshine, releasing two highly successful EPs. The name itself is telling of the sound that Adio has created. The mix of upbeat and catchy melodies with rather sad lyrics is what Bipolar Sunshine is all about, and I’m tipping Adio to be one to watch this year.”
5. ‘Get Away’ – Circa Waves
Natalie says: “After hearing their name a good few times over the past few weeks as ones to keep an eye (or an ear!) out for this year, I decided to check Circa Waves out myself, and I can see why there’s a hype brewing around the Liverpool-based band. The upbeat indie-pop is both feel good and catchy, leaving you wanting to hear more from a band that has, so far, only released two tracks. I’ll definitely be looking out for more songs from them – and you should too!”
6. ‘Let Go For Tonight’ – Foxes
Tom Elliott (@tomelliottuk) says: “Foxes had a tremendous 2013, collaborating with Fall Out Boy on ‘Just One Yesterday’ and reaching the U.S dance number one with her duet on Zedd’s ‘Clarity’. Foxes is set to raise the bar this year when her debut album Glorious drops, pestering the top 10 until she is consecutively getting number 1s!”
7. ‘Never Lose Your Flames’ – Issues
Tom says: “I only know Issues from their fun cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’, but they have their self-titled, debut album coming out next month and if this song is anything to go by it’s going to be a belter! They already have a strong following in the US, something that they can hopefully build upon as they become better known on British shores.”
8. ‘Hey Mario’ – Patent Pending
Tom says: “Sure, there are a lot of songs about Super Mario ( P Money’s ‘1 Up’ for something on the other end of the spectrum), but this song is full of witty puns and is a true pop-punk song its own right. We’re all looking out for our Maribro after all! Patent Pending will be at this year’s Hit The Deck Festival, set to take place in Nottingham on April 18.”
9. ‘Way Back (The Conflict)’ – Super Happy Fun Club
Tom says: “Need I say anymore? Super. Happy. Fun. Club. How do I get my membership?! Featuring the singer from Lucky Boys Confusion, Stubhy Pandav, Super Happy Fun Club are an absolute delight to listen to. With two EPs released so far, they’re back in the studio writing at the moment and I can’t wait to hear the outcome!”
10. ‘The Best Thing (That Never Happened To You)’ – We Are The In Crowd
Charlotte Selby says: “We Are The In Crowd are set to release their new album entitled Weird Kids on February 18, straight off the back of their kick-ass new single ‘The Best Thing (That Never Happened To You)’. I have a strong feeling this album is going to blow their previous one out of the water – based on the sound of this single of course!”
