Spotlight on Sport: Fencing
Demon Fencing was set up in 2011 by a student who wished to form a team to challenge Leicester University’s fencing team. Four years on and not only are our members taking on Leicester University in Varsity every March, but they are also competing in national competitions.
We coach members with no/little experience, and continue to support the development of experienced fencers to be able to compete nationally, or just for fun in training and in friendlies.
There are 3 types of weapons you can choose from; Foil, Epee and Sabre. Each requires a different style of fighting, so why not try your hand at each weapon and see which you prefer!
Demon Fencing is also a fun and social club, full of team spirit. We meet up every Wednesday evening for a night full of games and laughter, and we can regularly be found in the pub after training! The club is made up of a mix of students studying various degrees. It’s a great society to join if you want to make new friends, have a bit of fun and keep fit.
What were the club’s accomplishments last season?
Salem Al-mail: competed in the Slough Open competition. He was placed 15th out of 96. He also competed in the Merseyside Open and was placed 10th out of 89.
Two other members took part in their first ever National competitions, including the Cambridge Open and Slough Open, competing against some very experienced fencers. Both did very well and gained valuable experience that have helped them to improve.
All members had the opportunity to fence against the University of Leicester in a friendly match at the end of the year. The scores were very close for both our men’s and women’s teams – closer than they have ever been!
What is your most memorable moment from last season?
The highlight of our year was having the opportunity to host a friendly training session and match with Leicester University. New members got to experience fencing someone new and learned some new tricks. It was their first taste of a competition. More experienced members took the session more seriously and competed for points. There was a great atmosphere with everyone supporting and cheering on their team. We all really enjoyed it.
What are your aspirations for this season?
This year we are entering a team in the BUCS league for the first time. We are very excited as we have some strong fencers and hope by the time the competition comes around, we will have some new fencers willing to have a go.
How much does it cost to join your club?
All Sports Societies will require you to buy an Active Card – this is your insurance.
To join Demon Fencing we have a small fee of £40 for the year. Coaching, a Level 1 Achievement Award and loan of the kit is included in this price.
We will provide you with the clothing and of course the weapons, or feel free to use your own.
There will be opportunities if you want to purchase your own kit at a discounted price through our coach. We encourage you to do this, particularly if you wish to enter competitions regularly, or you can continue to borrow the club kit.
Why should students join your club?
Most people will hear or see fencing and shy away from the sport, thinking “it’s daunting”, “it will hurt”, or something they would not be able to do. BUT it is not something to be afraid of, it doesn’t hurt and anyone can try it – we even offer wheelchair fencing! Our coach will teach you everything you need to know, step by step. You will be amazed at how quickly you will pick it up!
Fencing is a bit like physical chess; it combines your physical ability with tactical skills, as you’re always trying to think one step ahead of your opponent. It will not only improve your general fitness, but will also develop your endurance, coordination, agility and tactful thinking – and it’s fun!
And it’s not just about the fencing – we also like to go to the pub after training to relax, and then join all the other societies on a big night out on a Wednesday.
