Spotlight on Sport: Hockey
DMUHC is comprised of three teams; a men’s team, and women’s team and a mixed team. Both the men’s and women’s teams play in BUCS leagues on a Wednesday, compete in the cup and play in Varsity at the end of the year against University of Leicester. The mixed team is mainly a development team for players wanting some game time but are not quite ready for the BUCS league. The mixed team plays in a local league on a Saturday and also compete in Varsity at the end of the year.
Everybody can attend weekly socials on Wednesday nights where we often dress up in fancy dress, have a few drinks, catch up with each other after both teams have played, and ultimately have a great time! Our socials are held at our sponsors’: The Polar Bear (soon to be ‘The Bowling Green’) and Odd Bar every Wednesday at 8pm.
Every year the hockey club attends the University Sports Tour along with plenty other of DMU’s finest sports clubs where we travel to a European destination for 5 days of sun, sea, sangria and a bit of hockey.
What were the club’s accomplishments last season?
Both Men’s and Women’s team achieved promotion to higher divisions in the BUCS league last season. The Mixed team triumphed in Varsity winning the cup for the third successive year, beating the hockey club at University of Leicester.
The Hockey Club was also nominated for team of the year at the University Sports Awards last year.
What is your most memorable moment from last season?
On the pitch: Winning Varsity in front of a home crowd for the third time in a row.
Off the pitch: There are so many! But tour is basically 5 days of the most memorable moments so lets go with that!!
What are your aspirations for this season?
To regain the Mixed Varsity cup for the fourth year.
Both teams fight for promotion again in the leagues.
How much does it cost to join your club?
To play you must have an active card which is bought from the Students’ Union.
Why should students join your club?
De Montfort University isn’t so much a club as it is a family! It’s full of players of different abilities, newcomers, seasoned veterans, non players (just there for the beer), drinkers, non drinkers, the list goes on! DMUHC is a well-rounded club suited to everyone out there!
