After recent success at BUCS short course in Sheffield, DMU Swim & Tri show no sign of slowing down after organising a 24 hour static bike fundraiser outside the SU this Wednesday. The team will be cycling from 11:30am on the Wednesday until Thursday morning, all in aid of the team’s chosen charity: Mind.
Mind is an organisation which offers support and information to those suffering from mental health issues; as well as helping raise awareness about the illnesses. Chairman, Alastair Barber, explains why the team supports the cause. “We chose the charity because health issues can affect anybody and not just those afflicted- it puts a huge strain on families and relationships. With statistics as high as 1 in 4 adults expected to experience a mental health problem in any given year, it’s more than likely that we’ll have known somebody affected, that’s why we want to help.”
On a rotation of two bikes, the swimmers and triathletes will pedal through the night collecting donations on the Student Union steps. Sophie Shipperbottom, the team’s Secretary says “Spinning is one of our most popular sessions, even amongst the swimmers. It’ll be great to get the whole team involved and raise money for a worthy cause whilst getting in a serious workout.”
