The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, as announced by Kensington Palace. Both mother and baby are said to be well but will stay in hospital overnight.

The baby, who is now third in line to the throne after both the Prince of Wales and the baby’s father Prince William the Duke of Cambridge, was delivered at 16:24 BST in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, weighing 8lb 6oz.

The news was then formally displayed on an official easel in Buckingham Palace’s forecourt as with tradition.

The baby, who becomes the Queen’s third great grandchild, is as yet unnamed.

A press release said that the Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

It continued: “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”
