When someone says to you the word “Halloween” what do you think of? For me it’s the perfect time to wear black all the time, not that I don’t already, but it is the perfect excuse where to dig out my goth/grunge side of my wardrobe. One day a year is pretty lonely, but it’s a “holiday” that I simply adore because you get to dress up as somebody else for a night. This year I’m stuck between going as heroine Katniss Everdeen or getting a Walter White-style costume from Breaking Bad, yellow jumpsuit and all.
But it’s not just about fancy dress. It’s also about the kinds of Halloween Style that most of the high streets give to us as a spooky present. Pop into your local Primark and you’ll find black fluffy jumpers with an embroidered ghost, or on ASOS to buy your pumpkin-patterned socks. So I’ve compiled a small list of some fashionable Halloween-inspired pieces to get you in the mood for the spooky time of year.
If you’re like me, you’re probably secretive about your abominable Topshop sock collection. Not secretive? I don’t blame you because you shouldn’t be embarrassed that you can walk into Topshop and say “I have that one and that one and that one” at the colourful wall of feet friends. This year, they’ve released a selection of spooky socks, which I’d happily wear for the other 364 days of the year. As usual, the special offer on socks still applies, allowing you to grab three of your favourite pairs for £8 or one pair alone for £3.50. You can wear them with Vans, Converse or even heels and cute brogues to give you a grunge-y feel to your outfit. Here are three that I’m definitely going to be getting from Topshop:
If you pop over to ASOS and type in ‘Halloween’ into the search bar, a few moving graphics will appear, dedicated to the holiday. ‘The Great Goth-by”, “Dawn of the Chung” and “Fresh to Death” are three options on tutorials and outfit choices you can opt for this year. By clicking onto them, you’ve opened up an abyss of Halloween-themed goodies that will surely get you in the mood. I’ve chosen two pieces, a clutch bag and some tights that will work for any outfit. The clutch bag, at £28, will be sure to question its usefulness due to it’s price but will give you that Halloween feel on a night out if you’re not planning on going full-costume mad:
The tights are 80 Denier in black with the addition of skulls on the knees that glow in the dark. Added with a black skater skirt with a pristine white shirt tucked in and some mega platforms, you’ll be hitting the bars in style. With the clutch too, you can’t go wrong at all, especially as the tights are a bargain at £8:
For all my gentleman friends out there looking to party it up this Halloween minus the crazy outfit, Topman could help you out a little bit. I’ve found a baseball/raglan tee that I’d perfectly describe as ‘rad’, which is perfect for Halloween. The t-shirt has a very graphic eyeball, placed on top of the words ‘The Creep’ and number 32, in true baseball-top style. It’s perfect in every sense of the word and a steal for £18:
The next Topman Halloween-themed find is a Worn By t-shirt in grey with a very apt skeleton hand, performing the ‘rock on’ sign. The bones of the skeleton scream Halloween and could be worn for the rest of the year, should you be into grunge-y things like me. For £28 it’s a little more expensive than my first choice of the baseball top, but if you fancy a t-shirt instead of ¾ sleeves, this choice is for you:
Another great male find is from River Island; another keen Halloween favourite for non-costume clothing. Again, it’s a t-shirt, but keeping in the spooky spirit – it’s a great option. For £16, you could get away with it being part of a costume:
Topman, Topshop, River Island and ASOS all have a great range of Halloween-inspired fashionable items. Part of the fun of Halloween is dressing up. Can’t wait to see all of your outfits this year! If you see me, I’ll be the one with the bow and arrow or the one dressed in a meth-cookers outfit…
