When Victoria Beckham started her fashion career, followers, industry makers and critics were sceptical of what she could do to style. Similarly, when Rihanna released her collection for River Island, fans of the store were worried that her ‘party-girl’ reputation could taint the high street chain. So, when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen started their high-end label, The Row, you can imagine the kind of chatter that spread around the fashion world.
But ten years ago, Mary-Kate and Ashley have been given nothing but praise for their label that they created when they were just 18-years-old. Now, at 28, they have a lot going for them; they’ve just announced that they will be creating an affordable jewellery range, and recently released a gorgeous perfume that was extremely popular in the beauty sector.
In an interview with ELLE magazine, Mary-Kate, half of the infamous Olsen Twins said, “People were asking us all sorts of questions in the beginning,” as she describes that the change from screen (after their extremely famous appearances in their own title films, Full House and other money-making hits) to fashion and the creation of The Row didn’t come without difficulty.
“It went beyond sceptical, [but] you just have to put on blinders and do your work.” Ashley continued. The sceptics were silenced once and for all when the pair took home the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year 2012, and the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year in June of this year.
While the Olsens have a second brand catered to a younger audience, Elizabeth and James, named after their parents, we look back at the best of The Row, and congratulate both Mary-Kate and Ashley for an overwhelming ten years of success in the fashion industry.
