After last year’s incredibly tense varsity games, DMU Hockey Club look to reclaim what is rightfully theirs in the battle at St Margaret’s Pastures.

After winning Mixed varsity for the third year running, both the Men’s and Women’s 1st XI looked to close the gap between them and University of Leicester.

Champagne shower to celebrate their victory.

Last year’s varsity saw the Men’s team take a 2-0 lead all game leaving them as favourites to win the trophy. Unfortunately University of Leicester fought back and secured four goals in the last 10 minutes of the game allowing them to retain their title. Now that the team know how close victory is they have upped their game, all season trying their hardest. Hopefully this will be the year that they take back their title.

After an 11-1 defeat in 2013, DMU Women’s Hockey closed the gap in 2014 leaving the final score as a 5-0 defeat. This year however the team have fought harder and want the varsity title.

The Demon spoke to Women’s Captain Beth Simmons on her thoughts for varsity.

When and where?

St Margaret’s Pastures, 4pm

Last years score?

5-0 defeat

How has this season gone for you?

Amazingly! We still have a chance of being promoted, all depends on our final match against University of Nottingham on 25th March.

How much has the team line up changed from last year?

A lot of freshers have joined the team this year but we are lucky that they are experienced hockey players. We have only lost two key players from last year.

How have you been preparing for varsity?

We have been training really hard this season and it has paid off so far as we are close to promotion in BUCS. We work on our strengths rather than our weaknesses to create super strengths.

Predictions for this year?

We will score 2 goals and improve on last years score.

Score prediction:

2-1 DMU win

Anything else?

The women’s team rely heavily on our frame of mind so as much support as possible would be wonderful. We want to overpower them from the offset.
