Spotlight on Sport: Volleyball
We are DMU Dragons Volleyball Team, a bunch of friendly, competitive and easy going university students keen to mix sports and studies at the highest level. Last year was undoubtedly our best year so far in the last 4 years and we’re looking for more people to make our 5th year even better. At the moment we have 2 teams in the BUCS leagues, 1 Men’s and 1 Women’s. This year we are hoping to enter a beginners Mixed team in the local league, where players who are aspiring to be amazing volleyball players can have the experience playing in matches before they step up to the main BUCS league. Since volleyball isn’t a very big sport in England, we offer coaching and guidance from beginners to advanced players, with one goal in mind and that is to improve and support each others development leading up to Varsity where we aim to beat UOL as we always do! 😉
What were the club’s accomplishments last season?
The biggest highlight of our club is the Women’s team and their achievement. It was their first time being entered in the BUCS league and Conference Cup Tournament, yet seemed like they have been playing for years, finishing 2nd in the BUCS league only recording a loss against the eventual winners (League result 8W-1L) and reaching the Semi-Finals of the CC Tournament losing to the Champions. Furthermore, they also managed to beat University of Leicester’s Women’s Volleyball team, not once, not twice BUT THRICE in one season! (BUCS, CUP & Varsity).
Men’s on the other hand lost out on a 2nd place finish by a technicality in officiating in one of the matches therefore finishing 3rd in their league, but are eager to make amends this year.
Varsity overall was a success with DMU Dragons bringing 2 points to the table with wins from both the Women’s and Mixed team on the day.
What is your most memorable moment from last season?
As cheesy as this sounds, every moment is memorable with DMU Dragons, from Pool competitions, Pizza Parties to Sushi nights, there is always something memorable to remember it by. Last year our members were from all over the Globe spanning from Japan to Brazil, so you will be part of a very diverse and culturally exciting individuals.
What are your aspirations for this season?
Last year we have been nominated for several awards for COLOURS but sadly unable to snatch one up, so this year the BEST SPORTS TEAM award shall be ours. 😉 though for this to come true, we have to excel our BUCS and Cup results from last year, which will be a challenge but a challenge we all strive to achieve.
How much does it cost to join your club?
DMU Active card is £40, and it is required if you would like to participate in University Matches and train, regardless of the sport.
A membership fee of £10 will be required to join the DMU Dragons for the whole year! The first session is free and will not require the membership fee to be paid.
Why should students join your club?
Because it is AWESOME!!! It is very easy to learn, fun to play and very challenging to those who want to play competitively. We are a great bunch of people who are looking to have fun and make the most out of University and Sports, it is also a great way to meet and make friends with other people from all over the world.
So if you’re up for some fun, learning something new, or to play in high intensity competitive matches, then I think you’ve found your sport!
