Last night the Royal opera house in Covent Garden played host to the annual GQ Men of the year awards.  The awards ceremony is in its 16th year and celebrates the best men in music, sport, TV amongst other categories, with one award dedicated to woman of the year.

Amongst the winners of this year awards was Michael Douglas who won legend of the year, Emma Watson who won women of the year and Andy Murray after his first Wimbledon win in June won the award for outstanding achievement.

From the dapper to the exuberant the men were dressed in their finest tuxes and suits, where the women were fabulous in their frocks. So when it came to choosing the 5 best dressed I faced a difficult decision.

In fifth place…

Even though the awards celebrates the best men of the year there is one award dedicated to a woman of the year. This year the award went to Emma Watson. However her ensemble doesn’t win the best dressed female award of the night for me. Instead it has to be the rock chick Rita Ora. In the past Rita Ora has not only made a statement through her music but also through her fashion choices. Last night was no exception. Rita wore a gorgeous black and yellow sequined striped floor length gown. The top half of the gown cupped under her cleavage and ran over her solar plexus and joining at the waist leaving her luscious sides exposed.  Ora drew her outfit together with a side quiff, spirally earrings and unique make up.  The black and yellow sparkler certainly set Rita a light separating her from the crowd.

In fourth…

Following the sparkling Rita Ora is British actor Eddie Redmayne who won the Remy Martin breakthrough award. It’s no surprise that the former face of British label Burberry is hot right now with his acting career going from strength to strength.  Eddie stepped away from the traditional black tie attire and opted for a light grey and blue checked suit, crisp white shirt and knitted navy blue tie. Spotted previously in checked suits at award ceremonies, Redmayne proves that the younger man can pull of a checked blazer and/or suit.

In third…

This is where it gets tricky.  The next three men could easily make my best dressed award of the night but there can only be one. Unfortunately for Nick Grimshaw it isn’t him. Grimmy won the GQ award for Radio personality of the year, another boost in his radio career after replacing Chris Moyles as BBC Radio 1’s breakfast DJ nearly a year ago.  I have always admired Nick’s style choices and envious of his effortless looking quiff and last night’s option was no let down. Grimmy kept it simple and classic wearing a Single breasted Black tux, felt lapel, black bow tie and shiny pointed shoes.

Just missing out on first place…

Even though he won the Hugo Boss most stylish award last night, Dan Stevens narrowly missed out on my best dressed of the night.  For those of you who don’t know, Dan Stevens is well known for his role in Downtown Abbey and undergoing a drastic style make over, over the past year.  Snapped with a smouldering pout it’s hard to imagine him never looking stylish.  What else is better than a man in a suit? A man in a suit with stubble. With his well-groomed locks and trimmed beard Stevens wore a silky 2 piece suit and satin looking scarf which screamed dapperness. It’s hard to believe now that he didn’t top my best dressed list, but just wait until you see who did.

And the BW award for the best dressed goes to…

As long as he’s got his suit and tie and all pressed up in black and white it has to be Justin Timberlake. Despite now winning an award JT showed the GQ awards a few things last night. Okay I’ll stop with the ‘Suit and tie’ references now.  2013 has been JT’s year with comeback album ‘The 20/20 experience’ hitting the charts, his unforgettable performance at last week’s MTV VMA’s and of course his collaborations with Jay-Z.  Photographed alongside legend Michael Douglas, Tom Ford and Samuel L Jackson, JT rocked the Suit and tie look in a three piece suit. What sets his tux away from other gentlemen of the evening has to be his paisley suit blazer. The jacket added that extra suave, sophistication and edge to JTs outfit making him my best dressed.

Honorary mention does have to go to Michael Douglas though; proving to men that you can look smart and classy at any age.
