At least 69 people are confirmed dead and 175 have been left injured after an attack on a Nairobi shopping centre, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.

Between ten and fifteen attackers – reported to be militants from the Al-Shabab movement are still inside the Westgate shopping centre along with an unknown number of civilians, either as hostages or in hiding.

Mr Kenyatta said: “With the professionals on site, we have a good chance to neutralise the terrorists as we could hope for.”

“The criminals are now located in one place within the building.”

Mr Kenyatta’s nephew and his fiancée are among the dead, the president confirmed.

The victims are from a number of different countries, including three Britons.

David Cameron branded it “an absolutely sickening and despicable attack of appalling brutality.

Kenyan officials have said that ‘major operations’ are underway, and a joint police and army task force are preparing a bid to bring the stand-off to an end.
