Oh the Grammys, how we love you so! Not for your burst of juicy gossip, frightfully talented musicians and recognition for those amazing stars, but for your flowing stream of incredible gowns from music’s leading ladies. * mega swoon *
This year, the Grammys went big. With Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performing a somewhat heartfelt ‘Same Love’, which allowed couples to be actually married on stage, Beyoncé, who wore a racy outfit from a former DMU student, performed with husband Jay Z and Daft Punk being the dark horses,it was an event full of utter madness and fun, of course.
Staritng my Grammys Fashion Roundup is “Queen” Beyoncé wearing a Michael Costello dress that I am personally not a fan of. “BLASPHEMY!” “SLANDER!” I hear you shout at your screens as you read this, but I think that Beyoncé could have chosen something that suited her more. Nevertheless it’s a pretty dress and very sexy-meets-on trend that Bey so loves.
The gorgeous Taylor Swift arrives on the Grammy Awards red carpet in a slinky and sparkly Gucci Première dress. The style of this dress is very similar to those of Elie Saab, who I simply adore – but what I love most about this dress is the mesh overlay that you can see most clearly on the neck and shoulder area. It’s your own personal interpretation whether you would consider this Gucci gown as ‘simple’ – it might be because of it’s fit, but I love that Taylor dressed it’s simplicity up even more with extreme smoky eyes and candy floss pink lips. Pretty and glamorous all at once!
In another wonderfully white dress is hip-hop artist, Amethyst Amelia Kelly – but you might know her as Iggy Azalea – wearing an embroidered pre-winter 2014 gown by Elie Saab. It’s a great, classic look on Iggy who has an otherwise edgy and quite risqué track record when it comes to event outfits. Iggy is also sporting the very popular and very on-trend slick back hairstyle, which is a perfect choice to show off some of the dress’ detailing as well as her angelic face. I love the pink lipstick and red nails to add some colour to the outfit and this goes to show that white doesn’t have to stay plain!
Steering onto another road, away from White Dress Lane, we find ourselves on Anna Faris’ front door on Perfect Strapless Dress Road. Anna wore a navy dress by Fitriani and although she might be super pale and platinum blonde – the blue is a perfect contrast from the other light tones. The gathering effect at the waist shows a bit of an edge to an otherwise simple gown with a long train and the navy colour is something that a lot of other ladies have been adopting onto their event outfit styles which I love. Unlike most, Anna has kept her hair straight and simple, which is a refreshing change to the loose curls or fancy up-do’s of other celebrities.
Pink attended the Grammys with husband Casey in tow wearing a fabulously rock star dress by Johanna Johnson. It suits Pink to wear… pink and the dress itself is something that might be considered unusual on the singer. The difference in materials on the dress, shows a somewhat architectural design of the dress, with a split showing well on the front of the dress. With her hair in her signature quiff and makeup pretty much minimal except smokey eyes, Pink keeps all of the focus on the dress – something that I firmly believe in!
Kelly Osborne is next wearing a gorgeous black dress with a ‘built-in’ cape and embellished shoulders. While I was never a huge fan of tops/shirts and dresses with overly embellished shoulders, I love this because it gives the dress something to make it a little fancier than just the cape, the rings and the draping length. A bit of glitz and glamour never hurt anybody and Kelly shows us how to do it well, while maintaining a smoldering, edgy look. Her makeup is something I love most so far from the Grammys, a matte magenta lip and lots of focus on eye shadow gives her outfit more to look at.
Finally, my best dressed of the evening comes to no surprise to any of you when I tell you it’s ‘Royals’ singer, Lorde, real name: Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor. The 17 year-old upcoming superstars from New Zealand won two Grammys for the aforementioned song, and attended the awards ceremony wearing Pre-Fall 2014 Balenciaga. I know what you’re thinking though, and it’s the same thing that a lot of people have thought also – it’s not a nice dress. But it is! If you consider Lorde’s gothic/grunge style, you’ll understand why she has chosen such a minimalistic and extremely gothic style at an awards ceremony where a lot of other women would choose pretty, pink and girlie dresses. Being a fan of the ‘all-black’ route of clothing, I can fully understand Lorde’s choice of high neckline, long sleeves and dark purple lips. Award number three for Best Dressed is coming your way, girl!
