Hi Freshers! I’m Elliot Barker and in 2012 I founded DMU’s Cocktail Society. After a massively successful few years, I depart Leicester for a year to pursue a placement in Brighton, leaving the Cocktail Society in the hands of my trusted new committee.
The DMU Cocktail Society is an enthusiastic group of individuals who all share a love of cocktails and the vibrant bar industry.
We are a workshop based society, meaning you will learn a lot about bartending and cocktails.
We start off with basic bar skills, which progresses to you making your favourite cocktails, and eventually a much more in-depth experience comes into play; learning the about the history of cocktails and the classic cocktails behind every spirit family. All of this will prepare you for a real cocktail competition!
Sian Dixon, vice chairperson of the society, said: “Being part of cocktail society has been a major highlight for me over the year. It has given me the chance to work behind a bar, widen my knowledge base and also see first-hand how a cocktail competition works.”
We host and participate in events throughout the year where you will get the chance to gain first hand bartending experience.
Last year, we were lucky enough to host a number of events within the university, including the Matriculation ceremony and Demon’s 18th Birthday, as well as competing and representing in external competitions and campaigns. All of these proved to be hugely successful and gained a lot of interest.
As part of the DMU Cocktail Society, you are entitled to a membership in the Leicester Bartender Association (L.B.A.) which grants you access into a small part of this wonderful industry. You will meet representatives from nearly every brand imaginable and have detailed training sessions with them and their product; which often leads to a great night out!
Speaking of great nights out, we host fairly regular socials, including joint ventures with not just other societies at DMU, but with other Cocktail Societies around the country.
We are looking for committed people that want to learn a new trade, meet like-minded people, and just generally have a good time.
We have accomplished so much in this past year, but we cannot do it without each and everyone one of you that sign up!
