DMU is running an Earth Week to make it a more sustainable university in which to study and work. The Earth Week starts on Monday 20th March and is a series of fun activities and events around sustainability, including film screenings, clothing swap shops, FREE Dr Bike session and talks from some very interesting people!
Here are just a handful of the exciting events on offer:
Monday 20th March, 6pm – 7pm, Hugh Aston, 0.08, ‘Sustainability, Media and the BBC’ a talk by Richard Smith, Sustainability Manager, BBC
A talk from Richard Smith, Sustainability Manager at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), about why sustainability is important to the BBC, the work of the Sustainable Productions team at the BBC and what they have achieved to date. Tuesday 21st March, 6pm – 7.30pm, Hugh Aston 0.08, ‘Before the Flood’ film screening
A film screening of Leonardo DiCaprio’s eco documentary focusing on the impacts of climate change and the actions needed to address this issue. It was made as part of National Geographic’s commitment to covering climate change. It was made available for free in 171 countries and subtitled in 45 languages to make it accessible to as many people as possible. The film gained a record 60 million views, making it the most watched National Geographic film of all time! Wednesday 22nd March, 11am – 3pm, Vijay Patel Design Wing, 1.11, Clothes Swap Shop and Craft Workshop
Fancy some new clothes for free? Want to help the environment? We are hosting a clothes Swap Shop and craft workshop in partnership Sue Ryder, Loseby Lane. DMU staff and students are invited to bring in old clothes, accessories, shoes and scrap fabric they no longer want to swap with others. You can bring your items in on the day to Room 1.11 in the Vijay Patel Design Wing from 9:30 onwards or drop them off at our designated drop off points- a box will be located in the Prayer Room in Portland Building and another box will be located in the Estates Development Building (opposite the Philip Tasker Building). No need to book, just pop along on the day!
Wednesday 22nd March, 1pm – 1.30pm, Queens Building, 0.09 ‘Bats on campus’
A talk about bats, bat ecology and the type of bats that might be found around the DMU campus. Find out about these fantastic creatures and how they can be protected.
Thursday 23rd March, 11am – 3pm, Entrance to Queens Building, FREE Dr Bike sessions
Give your bike some TLC with this free Dr Bike session. Free repairs and maintenance available up to the value of £20 per person. Open to DMU staff and students.
Friday 24th March, 5.30pm – 6.30pm, Queens Building 0.15, Eco Quiz
Come and test your eco knowledge in our eco quiz. Prizes available for winning teams/players.
We have lots more on offer, such as talk from Karl Letten, Environmental and Sustainability Officer and stalls throughout the week in the Food Village, so make sure to pop along whilst you’re buying your sustainably sourced lunches!
